Growing up in a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses, my life was shaped by a strict code of conduct and a profound sense of secrecy. My father served as an elder, a position that elevated our family’s status within the congregation but also intensified the pressure to conform to an ideal that often felt suffocating. As the daughter of an elder, I was burdened with the unspoken expectation to maintain a facade of perfection, even as the walls of our family life were adorned with hidden truths. 

In this blog, I will share my journey of navigating the complexities of faith, family, and self-identity. I will delve into the secrets that cloaked my upbringing, the lies I was taught to accept, and the painful yet liberating process of breaking free to find my own truth.


The Weight of Secrets

In the world of Jehovah’s Witnesses, family life is often portrayed as idyllic, filled with love, unity, and unwavering faith. However, my experience was marked by an underlying current of secrecy. Our family was a microcosm of contradictions. On the surface, we were the perfect Witness family, attending meetings, participating in service, and adhering to the teachings of the organization. Yet, beneath that veneer lay a tangled web of secrets that we were taught to keep hidden from the congregation.

As a child, I learned that our family’s internal struggles were not for public consumption. I was taught that our personal lives were none of anyone else’s business. This lesson became ingrained in me, shaping my understanding of privacy and truth. However, the irony was not lost on me; I was instructed to uphold the truth while simultaneously being educated in the art of deception. I found myself in a constant state of conflict, torn between the teachings of the congregation and the reality of my emotions.

The journey to liberation was not an easy one. It felt akin to dismantling my very being and painstakingly reassembling it piece by piece. Breaking free meant confronting the lies I had been taught and the falsehoods I had accepted. I had to face the reality that the teachings of the Watchtower Society, while providing a sense of community for some, had forced me into a life of inauthenticity. It was a painful process, full of tears and self-doubt, but it was also necessary for my growth. I realized that true liberation required me to embrace my emotions, to honor my intuition, and to accept the complexity of my existence.

Once I began to dismantle the beliefs that had held me captive, I embarked on a quest for truth—one that led me inward. My Journey Through Health Struggles, Healing, and Rediscovery


 


Life often has a way of testing our limits, pushing us into dark corners where we feel trapped and overwhelmed. My journey through health problems, the strains on my marriage, and the weight of past traumas is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The years of fighting against invisible battles, dealing with the aftermath of abuse, and navigating the complexities of health issues have shaped me into who I am today. This is not just a story of struggle, but also one of healing, rediscovery, and ultimately, hope.

 

The Weight of Buried Issues

For many years, I carried the burden of unaddressed issues in my marriage. Both my partner and I were caught in a cycle of misunderstandings and emotional distance, largely due to my inability to communicate my feelings and his lack of understanding of my struggles. We had built our lives together, but beneath the surface, there were layers of resentment and unresolved conflicts that threatened to unravel the very fabric of our relationship.

Additionally, the scars of abuse from a previous relationship weighed heavily on my heart and mind. The trauma I experienced created a barrier to intimacy and trust, leaving me feeling isolated even in the presence of my loved ones. I buried these feelings deep within, convincing myself that I could push through and that time would heal all wounds. However, as many know, buried issues do not just disappear; they fester and manifest in various ways.

 

The Collapse

The culmination of these unresolved issues and the stress they brought into my life eventually took a physical toll on my health. I began experiencing irregular heartbeats, which I initially dismissed as stress or anxiety. However, the situation escalated dramatically one day at work. As a hospital operator, I was accustomed to high-pressure situations, but nothing prepared me for the moment I collapsed in the middle of a shift.

I was wheeled down to the ER, where the doctors quickly assessed my condition. A blood test revealed alarming news: I had only 1 mg of magnesium in my blood. The doctor explained that this meant there was even less in my cells, which was critical because magnesium is essential for muscle function, including the heart. I was lucky to have not suffered more severe consequences, but the experience marked a turning point in my life.

 

Discovering the Root Cause

After a series of tests, I was diagnosed with a condition resembling Bartter’s Syndrome, in which my kidneys were dumping essential electrolytes. This revelation came alongside the discovery of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Celiac disease. Each diagnosis brought its own set of challenges and required significant lifestyle changes.

With POTS, I was told that I needed to increase my salt intake, contrary to what most people are advised. This was a radical shift in my thinking, as I had spent years avoiding salt due to health concerns. On the other hand, Celiac disease forced me to reevaluate my entire diet, removing gluten and learning how to nourish my body in a completely new way. The combination of these conditions presented a steep learning curve, but it also offered me an opportunity to reclaim my health.

 

The Emotional Toll

 As I navigated these health challenges, the emotional toll intensified. The PTSD from my past abuse loomed large, often manifesting in anxiety and panic attacks. My relationship with my husband was strained further as I struggled to articulate my feelings and experiences. In addition, my attempts to support my youngest son through his struggles with addiction created additional stress, as I felt helpless watching him battle demons that I once faced myself.

 I found myself at the bottom of a well, feeling trapped and desperate for a way out. The weight of my circumstances was crushing, and I often questioned if I would ever find peace again.

 

A Turning Point: Seeking Healing

In the midst of this chaos, I stumbled upon something unexpected that would change the course of my healing journey. While searching on YouTube for reiki and gong bath music—experiences I had enjoyed during an art tour a couple of years earlier—I discovered reiki healing music. Intrigued, I began to explore further, eventually uncovering binaural beats and other forms of healing music. 

This was the beginning of my journey back to myself. The soothing sounds provided an escape from the turmoil in my mind and body. I found solace in the gentle frequencies, which seemed to resonate with my inner self, offering a sense of calm I hadn’t felt in years. As I immersed myself in this healing practice, I began to feel a shift—a glimmer of hope that perhaps I could regain control over my life.

 

Rediscovering Myself

As I continued to explore different forms of healing music, I also began to integrate other practices into my daily routine. Meditation, yoga, and mindfulness became essential tools in my journey of self-discovery. Each practice helped me reconnect with my body, to listen to its needs, and to cultivate a sense of peace amidst the chaos.

Through this process, I started to peel back the layers that had shielded me from my emotions for so long. I began to confront the pain from my past, slowly allowing myself to grieve and heal. This was not an easy journey—there were days when I felt overwhelmed by the weight of my experiences. However, with each small step forward, I grew stronger.

 

Rebuilding Relationships

As I embarked on this journey of healing, I also recognized the importance of rebuilding my relationships. I have slowly learned to communicate more openly in my relationships, sharing my feelings and experiences in a way I had never done before. It has been a gradual process, but slowly, we are learning to understand each other better, learning to navigate the complexities of our relationship with compassion and empathy. 

My relationship with my son also evolved. I learned to approach his struggles with understanding rather than frustration. By sharing my own battles, I hoped to create a safe space for him to open up about his feelings. This newfound connection allowed us to support each other in ways we hadn’t before.

 

Embracing a New Lifestyle

 As I continued to heal, I embraced a new lifestyle that prioritized my physical and emotional well-being. I became more mindful of what I consumed, focusing on nourishing foods that supported my health. I learned to listen to my body, respecting its needs and limitations.

Exercise became a vital part of my routine, not just for physical health but also for mental clarity. Whether it was a gentle yoga session or a brisk walk in nature, moving my body helped me release pent-up emotions and stress. I found joy in these simple acts, which became a form of self-care that I had long neglected.

 

Finding Purpose

With time, I began to realize that my journey was not just about healing myself, but also about sharing my story with others. I started writing about my experiences, hoping to inspire those who might be struggling with similar challenges. I wanted to show that it is possible to rise from the depths of despair and find light again. 

Through my writing, I found a sense of purpose. I connected with others who resonated with my experiences, forming a community of support and understanding. Together, we shared our stories, offered encouragement, and celebrated each other’s victories, no matter how small.

My journey through health struggles, the challenges of marriage, and the shadows of past abuse has shaped me in profound ways. I have learned that healing is not a linear process; it is a winding path filled with ups and downs. However, through resilience, self-discovery, and the power of community, I have found my way back to myself.

Today, I embrace my life with newfound appreciation and gratitude. I continue to explore healing modalities and prioritize my well-being. While the scars of my past remain, they serve as reminders of my strength and resilience. I am no longer defined by my struggles; instead, I am empowered by the journey I have undertaken.

As a child, I found myself unusually drawn to stones and crystals. My return to crystals began during a particularly challenging phase of my healing journey. While searching for alternative therapies, I came across information about the healing properties of different stones. Intrigued, I delved deeper into the world of crystals, learning about their unique energies and how they could assist in emotional and physical healing. 

At first, I was skeptical. How could stones, mere minerals from the Earth, have any effect on my health or well-being? Yet, as I began to explore their properties, I was drawn to the idea that these natural elements could carry vibrations that resonate with our own energies.

I started by purchasing a few basic crystals: amethyst for tranquility, rose quartz for love and compassion, and clear quartz for clarity and healing. With each stone I brought into my life, I felt an innate connection. Holding them in my hands, I could sense their energies—gentle yet powerful, soothing yet invigorating.

I began incorporating crystals into my daily routine. I would meditate with them, placing them on my body to enhance my energy flow.
