Life often has a way of testing our limits, pushing us into dark corners where we feel trapped and overwhelmed. My journey through health problems, the strains on my marriage, and the weight of past traumas is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The years of fighting against invisible battles, dealing with the aftermath of abuse, and navigating the complexities of health issues have shaped me into who I am today. This is not just a story of struggle, but also one of healing, rediscovery, and ultimately, hope.
The Weight of Buried Issues
For many years, I carried the burden of unaddressed issues in my marriage. Both my partner and I were caught in a cycle of misunderstandings and emotional distance, largely due to my inability to communicate my feelings and his lack of understanding of my struggles. We had built our lives together, but beneath the surface, there were layers of resentment and unresolved conflicts that threatened to unravel the very fabric of our relationship.
Additionally, the scars of abuse from a previous relationship weighed heavily on my heart and mind. The trauma I experienced created a barrier to intimacy and trust, leaving me feeling isolated even in the presence of my loved ones. I buried these feelings deep within, convincing myself that I could push through and that time would heal all wounds. However, as many know, buried issues do not just disappear; they fester and manifest in various ways.
The Collapse
The culmination of these unresolved issues and the stress they brought into my life eventually took a physical toll on my health. I began experiencing irregular heartbeats, which I initially dismissed as stress or anxiety. However, the situation escalated dramatically one day at work. As a hospital operator, I was accustomed to high-pressure situations, but nothing prepared me for the moment I collapsed in the middle of a shift.
I was wheeled down to the ER, where the doctors quickly assessed my condition. A blood test revealed alarming news: I had only 1 mg of magnesium in my blood. The doctor explained that this meant there was even less in my cells, which was critical because magnesium is essential for muscle function, including the heart. I was lucky to have not suffered more severe consequences, but the experience marked a turning point in my life.
Discovering the Root Cause
After a series of tests, I was diagnosed with a condition resembling Bartter’s Syndrome, in which my kidneys were dumping essential electrolytes. This revelation came alongside the discovery of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Celiac disease. Each diagnosis brought its own set of challenges and required significant lifestyle changes.
With POTS, I was told that I needed to increase my salt intake, contrary to what most people are advised. This was a radical shift in my thinking, as I had spent years avoiding salt due to health concerns. On the other hand, Celiac disease forced me to reevaluate my entire diet, removing gluten and learning how to nourish my body in a completely new way. The combination of these conditions presented a steep learning curve, but it also offered me an opportunity to reclaim my health.
The Emotional Toll
As I navigated these health challenges, the emotional toll intensified. The PTSD from my past abuse loomed large, often manifesting in anxiety and panic attacks. My relationship with my husband was strained further as I struggled to articulate my feelings and experiences. In addition, my attempts to support my youngest son through his struggles with addiction created additional stress, as I felt helpless watching him battle demons that I once faced myself.
I found myself at the bottom of a well, feeling trapped and desperate for a way out. The weight of my circumstances was crushing, and I often questioned if I would ever find peace again.
A Turning Point: Seeking Healing
In the midst of this chaos, I stumbled upon something unexpected that would change the course of my healing journey. While searching on YouTube for reiki and gong bath music—experiences I had enjoyed during an art tour a couple of years earlier—I discovered reiki healing music. Intrigued, I began to explore further, eventually uncovering binaural beats and other forms of healing music.
This was the beginning of my journey back to myself. The soothing sounds provided an escape from the turmoil in my mind and body. I found solace in the gentle frequencies, which seemed to resonate with my inner self, offering a sense of calm I hadn’t felt in years. As I immersed myself in this healing practice, I began to feel a shift—a glimmer of hope that perhaps I could regain control over my life.
Rediscovering Myself
As I continued to explore different forms of healing music, I also began to integrate other practices into my daily routine. Meditation, yoga, and mindfulness became essential tools in my journey of self-discovery. Each practice helped me reconnect with my body, to listen to its needs, and to cultivate a sense of peace amidst the chaos.
Through this process, I started to peel back the layers that had shielded me from my emotions for so long. I began to confront the pain from my past, slowly allowing myself to grieve and heal. This was not an easy journey—there were days when I felt overwhelmed by the weight of my experiences. However, with each small step forward, I grew stronger.
Rebuilding Relationships
As I embarked on this journey of healing, I also recognized the importance of rebuilding my relationships. I have slowly learned to communicate more openly in my relationships, sharing my feelings and experiences in a way I had never done before.
